A New Study Shows That Marijuana Can Improve Runner’s High And Reduce Pain During Exercise

July 19, 2023 by Kyle Jaeger

According to a recent study, marijuana is linked with a more enjoyable running experience.

Researchers from the University of Colorado Boulder asked 49 runners to rate different aspects of their runs, both after and without cannabis use.

The study published in the journal Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research last week found that participants felt “less negative effects, more positive feelings, and greater feelings of tranquility, enjoyment, and runner’s-high symptoms” during cannabis-infused runs.

Researchers observed that the runners ran slower by 31 seconds per mile after marijuana consumption, but said this was not statistically significant.

states that participants also reported lower levels of pain after their cannabis-based run (vs. noncannabis-based) runs. The perceived exertion was not different between runs.

The study concludes that “Results suggest acute cannabis use could be associated with more positive exercise experiences among regular cannabis users.” It is necessary to conduct research using a variety of methodologies, exercise modalities and diverse populations to determine the long-term benefits and harms associated with this behavior.

The runners’ positive experiences with cannabis are consistent with findings from a study that was conducted in 2019. This study found that marijuana users tend to exercise more and get healthier results.

, a study published in 2020, found that older people who use cannabis are more likely to be physically active.

Researchers found in a similar study published in 2021 that marijuana users are more physically active than their non-using peers.

According to a recent study by the American Medical Association, medical marijuana use is linked with “significant improvements” of quality of life in people with chronic pain or insomnia. These effects are also “largely sustained” with time.
