According to a lobbyist, Sherrod Brown, the chairman of the Senate Banking Committee (D-OH), said that a marijuana banking law will not be voted on this summer despite recent plans.
The House Oversight and Accountability Subcommittee on Health Care and Financial Services scheduled an hearing on the Food and Drug Administration’s refusal to regulate CBD and hemp-derived products. Members of both chambers have filed a bill to address the issue.
The House Rules Committee will decide if there will be votes on the floor for new amendments that would defund certain federal agencies’ practice of testing job applicants for marijuana, and encourage research into psychedelics for veterans.
The House Appropriations Committee has directed federal officials to take action to develop hemp-based alternatives to plastic, to create a device that detects marijuana-impaired drivers and to combat illegal cannabis growing on public land.
The Florida marijuana campaign, along with its supporters, filed briefs at the state Supreme Court to oppose the Attorney General’s attempt to stop voters from voting on a legalization measure on the ballot in 2024.
Sen. John Fetterman, D-PA, tacitly supported Wiz Khalifa’s plan to “stone af” (get high) on cannabis before he made the first pitch in a Pirates’ game this week. But the rapper went one step further and got “shroomed” out before stepping up on the mound.
The Tribal Council of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in North Carolina voted to place a referendum to legalize marijuana on the ballot. If legalized, cannabis for recreational use would be available to all adults over 21 years old, regardless of tribal affiliation.
Federal
The White House Office of National Drug Control Policy awarded law enforcement agencies for “outstanding efforts” to stop illegal drug trafficking.
Sen. Michael Bennet, (D-CO), expressed his surprise again in a Senate Floor Speech that the U.S. was moving to enact cannabis reform at the same time as restricting abortion.
Rep. Matt Rosendale, R-MT, said that one of his top priorities for the Farm Bill 2023 is “to create a separate regulatory structure for industrial hemp.”
Two new co-sponsors have been added to the House marijuana banking legislation, bringing it up to 64.
STATES
Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek, along with U.S. Rep. Earl Blumenauer(D-OR), wrote a letter to Multnomah county and Portland officials urging them to deal with the “crisis”.
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D), tweeted: “New York continues to lead the nation in cannabis production! New Yorkers can now access more opportunities for their families and communities with the Cannabis Growers Showcase & new provisional licenses.
The Joint Committee on Cannabis Policy of the Massachusetts legislature held an hearing on several marijuana bills.
The North Carolina representative claimed that his bill for psychedelic research is still “alive.”
A Rhode Island Representative is pressing Gov. Dan McKee (D), to appoint members to the Cannabis Advisory Board.
A judge in Arizona refused to expunge the record of a man who was serving a 16 year sentence for selling one ounce marijuana.
Arkansas now has a top-ranking medical cannabis regulator.
Maryland’s public attorney praised the new marijuana laws in Maryland and declared “we must stop this war on drugs.”

According to a review, “there are enough epidemiological data to suggest that both cannabis and kratom products are used for self-treatment of pain and that some people actively use both drugs.” This could produce additive or synergistic benefits in the treatment that have yet to be characterized.
