Minnesota’s First Marijuana Shop Has ‘Overwhelming Sales’ On The First Day Of Legalization, And Had To Turn Away Customers and Close Online Orders

August 2, 2023 by Kyle Jaeger

The first and, for the time being, only recreational marijuana shop in Minnesota, opened its doors Tuesday. The business was so overrun by the demand that it had no choice but to temporarily suspend online orders and turn away customers.

Red Lake Nation Tribe took advantage of a special feature in the state’s new legalization law that went into effect Tuesday. opened its Red Lake storefront well before state regulators expected traditional retailers to begin being licensed.

Some people traveled hours (Red Lake, Minnesota is 3-4 hours away from the major cities of Minnesota) and waited in scattered rainstorms outside the NativeCare store to be among the first to take part in the legal market. The business reported that it had served over 300 customers by the end of the afternoon and that they needed to turn away people around 3 PM local to “be sure that everyone who has been patiently awaiting” could be served.

The shop announced on Wednesday that it would suspend online orders because of the “overwhelming number” of orders that were made. They also needed to ensure that orders from the previous 48 hours had been fulfilled.

Red Lake Nation, the only tribe in Minnesota that is currently selling cannabis legally, will soon follow. White Earth Nation is expected to follow suit, as its governing council voted to approve marijuana sales just last week.

State-licensed cannabis retailers will not be available until at least 2024. While possession and cultivation of marijuana for adults over 21 is now legal, it’s expected that the law was passed on Tuesday. Former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura announced last week that he too wants to be part of the action and have his face appear on a marijuana product .

It also created the Office of Cannabis Management, which was launched last month. The primary regulatory body will be responsible for overseeing the market. The governor is actively looking for an executive director.

The Cannabis Expungement Board is another body which has been established. It will facilitate the sealing of records for those with marijuana convictions in their record. The review of eligible cases began on Tuesday.

Before Walz even signed the reform law, the state created a website to serve as a central hub of information on the new law. Officials are also soliciting vendors who can help create a licensing system.

It is illegal for adults to vape or smoke marijuana inside a multifamily building, such as an apartment. This includes a balcony, patio, or even outdoors. A $250 fine is the penalty for breaking the law.

The policy on marijuana possession by minors has also caused some confusion. The bill sponsors intended to eliminate criminal penalties, but it has recently been revealed that those under 21 caught with cannabis may be charged as a petty crime under a statute that wasn’t changed by the legalization act. has requested a special legislative session in order to codify the criminalization of underage possession, and to address other “glaring” issues.

On Tuesday, another Minnesota Law went into effect that legalizes the possession of drug paraphernalia and syringes, as well as testing for controlled substances, residue, and drug paraphernalia.
