Minnesota Governor invites Iowa adults to buy marijuana and watch baseball in his state following legalization

August 11, 2023 by Kyle Jaeger

Minnesota’s Governor says Iowa adults can visit the state to watch a baseball match, buy marijuana and attend a game under Minnesota’s recently implemented legalization laws.

In an Iowa PBS interview that aired Friday, Governor. Tim Walz, a Democrat from Iowa, was asked if Iowans could visit his state to participate in the cannabis industry while their state still prohibits it.

Walz began by saying “prohibition does not work,” that marijuana enforcement is disproportionately impacting Black communities, and that “the illicit cannabis trade with fentanyl, xylazine, and other things that we see on our streets are also dangerous.”

As regulators continue to work on licensing traditional retailers which isn’t anticipated to happen before 2024, Iowans can now travel across the border to Minnesota to enjoy its marijuana market. However, there are currently just two tribally-owned cannabis shops operating.

Walz gave Iowa adults a few tips if they are considering a visit.

He stated. They can consume cannabis legally, just like any other substance. You can’t drive. You need to be clear about this if you work for an employer who tests you on drugs.

Walz’s remarks on marijuana can be seen starting at 19:40 in the video:

The governor stated, “But, the most important thing is to trust Minnesotans – or trust, in this instance, we hope Iowa will go along with it too – to make these decisions themselves, whether they are about your health care, or whether you want to use cannabis recreationally as an adult.”

Adults in Wisconsin, where GOP lawmakers have consistently resisted legalization, may also take advantage of their proximity to the North Star State, as they’ve been doing in Illinois. Adults from Wisconsin, where GOP legislators have resisted the legalization of marijuana, could also benefit from their proximity to Minnesota , as they did in Illinois.

It’s about freedom, quite honestly. Walz said, “I trust adults to make decisions on their own.” “I have two 16-year olds and one 22-year old.” I don’t encourage them to use marijuana, but they can do so once they turn 21.

Walz has embraced the legalization law which took effect on August 1 and dismissed pushback by the GOP minority who have asked him convene a Special Sessionto address what they described as “loopholes around policies related” to underage consumption and possession.

He said Tuesday that Republicans should stop spreading “misinformation” about the law. He was defending the “thoughtful legislation” the Democratic majority of the legislature presented this session.”

Former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura said last week that he wants to get in on the action, too. Jesse Ventura announced last week that he too wants to be a part of the action and will become “the first major politician in America ” to have his image on a marijuana product.

It also created the Office of Cannabis Management, which was launched last month. The primary regulatory body will be responsible for overseeing the market. The governor is actively looking for an executive director.

The Cannabis Expungement Board is another body which has been established. It will help seal records for those with marijuana convictions in their record. The review of eligible cases began last week.

Before Walz even signed the reform law, the state created a website to serve as a central hub of information on the new law. Officials are also soliciting vendors who can help create a licensing system.

Last week, another Minnesota Law went into effect that legalized drug paraphernalia, syringe service, controlled substance residue, and testing.

A Minnesota Government Psychedelics Task Force is also being formed in order to prepare Minnesota for possible legalization of substances such as psilocybin or ibogaine. The panel’s first meeting was delayed by one month and appointments are behind schedule. However, the legislator who spearheaded its creation is not concerned about the delays.
