ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE), – The City may soon limit the production of marijuana by individuals with a new bill.
It has been just over two years since the legislature of the state legalized recreational cannabis use in the entire state. After that historic moment it wasn’t long before people could possess and grow cannabis at home. New Mexico’s Cannabis Regulation Act allows anyone over 21 to grow six mature cannabis plants, and six seedlings. However, cities may also adopt their own rules.
The proposed ordinance, by Brook Bassan who represents the far Northeast Heights area, aims to regulate the way people grow marijuana and reduce the smell from cannabis production in residential homes. The bill would require that cannabis plants grown in homes be kept in enclosed spaces such as a room or greenhouse to minimize odors. It would also ban outdoor growing.
The ordinance will be presented to the Council on Wednesday, before being sent to the Finance and Government Operations Subcommittee of the council for review.
