RFK Jr. Reaffirms that Legalizing Marijuana and Using Revenue to Fund Treatment Centers would be ‘Part of My Presidency.’

September 14, 2023 by Kyle Jaeger

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is a candidate for president in 2024. He has again called for federal legalization of marijuana, the opening up of banking services to the industry, and for cannabis tax revenues to be used for drug treatment and rehab centers.

During a Wednesday appearance on C-SPAN’s Washington Journal, Kennedy, who was running as a Democrat at the time, answered a Republican’s question about his policy on cannabis.

The son of Robert Kennedy, former Attorney General, and the nephew of John F. Kennedy, reiterated his desire to include federal legalization along with strategic tax revenue use in “my campaign” as well as “my presidency.”

Kennedy has previously revealed that he was addicted to drugs for 15 years during his youth. He reiterates his concern about the “proliferation of stimulants and mind altering substances”. But he says he believes in personal freedoms and finds it unacceptable to criminalize and imprison people because of their drug use.

“I’ve argued that we should legalize pot. He said that a federal marijuana tax should be set aside for drug rehabilitation and treatment. “Renewal centers” would focus on treating the “rise in mental illness, PTSD and drug abuse that debilitates our children.”

Kennedy said that such centers could be used to teach organic farming, which can also be a therapy tool.

He said he also supported allowing cannabis businesses access to traditional banking services. The status quo, he said, has created an industry that is heavily reliant on cash and “encourages even more crime”.

The candidate emphasized the caller’s political affiliation and said he was “very, extremely happy” that he had supporters from all sides of the political spectrum by using a straightforward approach and telling truths.

Kennedy has been promoting his comprehensive drug policy since he entered the presidential race. He’s said that this would include taxing and legalizing certain psychedelics.

In the same month, he also discussed his 40-year sobriety in an interview with Bill Maher on “Club Random.” He declined Maher’s invitation to smoke on the show. During the conversation, he didn’t seem to mind that the host indulged him.
