Connecticut Marijuana Sales Exceed $25 Million for the First Time in September

October 10, 2023 by Kyle Jaeger

New state data released on Tuesday show that Connecticut had another record-breaking month in marijuana sales, with recreational and medical purchases surpassing $25 million.

{Adult-use cannabis sales hit $14,388,751 last month–the ninth month in a row of record-topping recreational marijuana purchases since the market launched in January.|The adult-use cannabis market hit span span-data-sheets-userformat ='”2:513,”3 “:”1:4,”2 “:””$”#,##0.00 “,”12:0 data-sheets-value ='”1:3,”3:14388751.32 ‘>$14388,751 last month — marking the ninth consecutive month of records for recreational marijuana Medical cannabis sales reached $10,814,987.

The Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection reported that legal cannabis sales in September totaled $25,203.738. This is an increase of about $250,000 compared to August.

Patients purchased 284,116 medical marijuana products. Adults bought 376 035 total cannabis items. The cost of recreational marijuana has also been steadily declining since the opening of the market, with an average product price of $38.37 in the last month.

Over half (52%) of the marijuana purchased in the last month (or flower) was usable. Vapes made up 30 percent of the sales, followed closely by edibles with 11 percent.

DCP stated that the preliminary data did not include the taxes collected on adult-use transactions at the point of sales. The department will review the data further. Medical marijuana patients don’t pay tax on their medicine.

The department said that adults who consume cannabis should do so responsibly. This includes storing the products in their original packaging and keeping them out of reach of pets and children.

Connecticut appears to be experiencing the same commercial trends as other states after legalizing cannabis, with the medical market slowly dwindling away as the adult-use program matures and grows.

As of July 1, Connecticut residents 21 years and older are now able to grow marijuana plants in their homes for personal use. This is one of the newest provisions of the state’s cannabis legalization laws.

Before the law became effective, DCP issued a notice to to remind the public of the policy change. The notice outlined the rules, and encouraged people who chose to participate to grow cannabis “responsibly.”

Connecticut officials announced recently that they will roll out a loan program to support social equity marijuana businesses. This program provides financial assistance for people who have been disproportionately affected by prohibition expand their operations in the legal sector.

Connecticut is not the only state that has seen record marijuana sales in recent month.
