Colorado Governor Jared Polis (D) delivered his annual State of the State Address on Thursday. Jared Polis, a Democrat, praised Colorado’s leadership in adult-use marijuana as well as the emerging psychedelic movement.
Polis stated in his speech that “Colorado is the first state to have legalized recreational cannabis use, setting a new standard for innovation, safety, and economic mobility, which has been copied by other states and countries around the world.” Thanks to the voters of Colorado, we are once again at the forefront of natural medicine. We’re unfreezing more than 50 years of research that was stifled to discover the benefits of this treatment for our residents and those beyond.
Colorado was one out of two states that legalized cannabis in 2012 through ballot measures. It was also the first state to launch a market for adult-use in 2014. Polis also passed a psychedelics bill into law in May last year. This was following a voter approved initiative to legalize the use of psychedelics by 2022.
Polis has accepted the reforms and called psychedelics “promising treatment options” for certain mental conditions. However, he refused to endorse the proposal before voters approved it at the 2022 elections.
Since then, the governor has continued to support these programs. In August, he stated that legalizing marijuana and psychedelics had been “very positive” for the state. He also added that he believed adults should be able to make their own decisions about drug use.
Polis called for lawmakers to grant him the authority to pardon people who have been convicted of psychedelics in the past.
He recently celebrated Colorado’s 10th Anniversary of legal adult-use marijuana sales, the first in the country.
Polis said at the time that the legal cannabis industry had created thousands of jobs, helped to grow our economy, and made significant progress in equity, industry development, banking and used sales revenue to build new schools throughout the state. “We will continue to push for a more efficient and just system that serves Colorado’s people.”
Polis recently retaliated last week against Republican Presidential candidate and Florida Governor. Ron DeSantis claimed that Colorado’s illicit cannabis market was bigger today compared to before legalization.
The spokesperson for the governor said: “The fact is that Colorado voters approved legalization of marijuana. This is curbing illicit markets, getting dealers off streets, reducing young use, funding schools construction, supporting jobs, and Colorado’s economic growth.” “Colorado will gladly offer advice to the Florida Governor on how to improve economic freedom and personal liberty like we do in Colorado.”

They also promoted new rules for the industry that take effect next week. The new regulations for the cannabis industry will take effect next week, including higher sales limits for cannabis-friendly hospitality businesses.
As he works to reform federal law , the governor proposes new cannabis tax distributions on a state-level basis in order to promote equity, streamline licensing, and further promote equity. He said that Colorado should be the “center” for the global and national marijuana market once the prohibition is lifted.
Polis has separately stated that he supports the Secure and Fair Enforcement Regulation Banking Act (SAFER), a bill introduced by Congress to normalize the marijuana business at the federal government level. He added that federal legalization is what’s really needed to allow Colorado to be a leader in the marijuana industry at the national and global level.
