California Regulators Release New Marijuana Dashboard with Data on Sales, Prices, Licensing, And Harvests

February 21, 2024 by Kyle Jaeger

California regulators launched a new database of marijuana sales and licensee information to better inform consumers, stakeholders and legislators about the industry.

The Department of Cannabis Control of the state officially launched its online resource on March 28. It features four interactive dashboards that provide data on cannabis licensing and harvests as well as pricing, monthly sales, and prices.

A DCC representative stated during a virtual presentation on Wednesday that this is for “people who are interested in cannabis trends and other things of the like to be able use these dashboards at their heart’s desire.”

Filters can be applied to each dashboard in order to refine the data to a finer level. They can, for example, look up the active licenses of manufacturers and then further breakdown the data to find out the number annual versus provisional licenses.

You can also find out the total sales for specific product categories, such as flowers packaged in 1/8th ounces.

The dashboard only includes data for 2020 to June 2023. This leaves a large gap. DCC stated that they plan to update all data for 2023 within the next couple of months. After that, they will update monthly sales quarterly.

California is the only state that provides monthly sales updates.

Sean O’Connor is the chief information officer of DCC. He told Marijuana Moment the state’s sales data are extracted from “track and trace software providers Metrc” and entered by cannabis businesses.

He said, “The Department tests and validates this data to ensure that the information displayed on-line is as accurate as it can be.” This validation and testing is why data isn’t provided in real time.

DCC released a separate online tool in 2022, which allows users to view an interactive map that shows where marijuana businesses are allowed–and blocked–from opening throughout the state.

The tool highlights the fact that over half of the cities and counties in the state do not permit any cannabis licensees operating within their jurisdiction. Advocates say this is a major problem which has allowed the illegal market to continue despite voter approval for legalization.

While the Governor of California has pledged to continue to work to “strengthen the market for marijuana in the state, he proposed last month to close a government budgetary gap by borrowing $100 millions from a cannabis-tax fund that is designated to law enforcement and public safety initiatives.

California’s legislature is exploring ways to expand the cannabis market in California, as well as other drug policy reforms that deal with issues like psychedelics.

Marijuana Moment tracks more than 1,000 cannabis and psychedelic bills that have been introduced in state legislatures, and Congress. Patreon supporters who pledge at least $25/month gain access to our interactive charts, maps and hearing calendar.

Assemblymember Matt Haney, a Democrat, is renewing the push for legalizing cannabis cafes across the state. He has recently introduced a bill and plans to collaborate with the Governor and regulators in order to address concerns that led to the previous version being vetoed .

Bipartisan California legislators have also recently introduced a bill to legalize psychedelic services centers, where adults over 21 could access psilocybin and other psychedelics in a controlled environment, with facilitators trained.

The Republican Assembly sponsor behind that legislation is also the author of a separate bill on psychedelics that focuses on research and creates a framework to allow for regulated therapeutic access. has already passed through the Assembly with unanimous support this year.
