According to a recent double-blind study, THCV (a lesser-known cannabinoid) appears to be more energizing than delta-9 THC, the more dominant compound in marijuana. It also does not cause fatigue or “munchies”, as is often associated with this compound.
The cannabis genetics firm Phylos, and the marijuana research company People Science, announced on Tuesday the results of a study they conducted. They found that THCV products “significantly increased motivation, energy and well-being compared with placebo.”
Cannabinoid is one of the many cannabis components that are now available. It was once called “diet weed”, due to its lack of appetite inducing properties.
Researchers gave 78 participants either placebo gummies (without any THC), delta-9-only gummies (with only THC) or gummies infused Phylos “Get Sh*t Done”, a THCV dominant plant.
The researchers found that 20% of the participants who took the THCV gummies felt more “energized” than those taking the placebo. 40% more people said they were able to enjoy their daily activities when using the novel cannabinoid.
The THCV group did not show a statistically significant difference in hunger between those who took THC alone and those who received THCV. THC-only users were also three times more likely to experience fatigue than those who took THCV.
Phylos reported that both the THC-only gummies and THCV gummies increased activity, exercise performance and motivation in comparison to placebo.
The study, while double-blinded, has not yet been published in an academic journal.
In a press statement, Alisha Hollay, Chief Scientific Officer at Phylos stated that “this study represents a pivotal point for the cannabis industry as it relates to understanding the effects of THCV combined with THC.” The Natural Natural THCV Study allows us to use our outstanding plants to advance targeted cannabis products and chart new territory in understanding the efficacy natural cannabinoids.
Phylos Chief commercial officer Whitney Conroy stated that consumers “want and deserve to have access to plant-based, natural wellness products that are backed up by science.
She said: “Natural Natural partners with industry’s leading growers, extractors and brands so that customers can be assured the products they buy are made from the highest-quality ingredients with proven results.”
Scientists are working to harness the therapeutic potential that minor cannabinoids, such as THCV, have.
A peer-reviewed research study published in the last year on lesser-known cannabinoids from hemp and marijuana found that compounds like THVC could help treat dermatological conditions such as psoriasis , eczema , and acne .
Researchers did not discuss in the study the mechanisms by which THCV could produce unique effects compared with delta-9 THC. Prior research suggests that THCV may, at least in low concentrations, be an antagonist, as opposed to an agonist, of the CB1 endocannabinoid receptor. This could mean consumers can avoid some common effects, such as an increased appetite, associated with delta-9 THC.
Researchers from Washington State University (WSU), recently revealed how cannabis activates a cluster of neurons that are located in the region of the hypothalamus of the brain to stimulate appetite.
