Connecticut Marijuana Sales Hit Record $22 Million in March as Adult-Use Market Matures

April 10, 2023 by Kyle Jaeger

According to preliminary state data, Connecticut had a record amount of combined medical and recreational marijuana sales in October.

March was the third month since adult-use marijuana sales were launched in the state. There has been an upward trend in these first months.

The growth in medical marijuana sales is still faster than that of recreational. While the established market for patients brings in approximately $12.6 million, the industry with a younger population saw $9.6 million in cannabis commerce in the month.

Both categories saw sales increase: February saw an increase in medical marijuana sales of $1.2 million, while adult-use sales rose by $2.6 million.

As more businesses go online and the demand for medical marijuana registrations drops, it has been a trend that state recreational markets have overtaken the larger share of the industry.

The data that the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection released does not include taxes people pay at the point of sale of adult-use products. The same tax is not applicable to medical cannabis products.

After a thorough review of state’s post-legalization criminal elimination program, Connecticut prosecutors have dismissed over 1,500 marijuana cases and modified 600 more.

Gov. In January, Ned Lamont (D), separately announced that nearly 43,000 marijuana-related conviction records had been cleared by the state. In 2021 , he signed the legalization legislation which allowed the state to provide mass cannabis conviction relief.

In January , the state launched a web portal that gives information to residents about their cannabis records. It also provides guidance for those with older eligible convictions who were not automatically erased by petitioning the courts.

Lamont supports the state’s adult market which was launched at the start of the year and he believes it will reduce illicit sales.

He also joked about how one of his worries regarding the rollout of cannabis would be finding a spot in line at one dispensary. Although he wasn’t serious, the governor had previously not dismissed the possibility of joining the legal market.

In the meantime, a Connecticut legislative panel approved a bill decriminalizing small amounts of psilocybin mushrooms.

Outside of Connecticut, marijuana sales are also strong.

Missouri’s cannabis sales reached a record $126,000,000 in March. This is the second month since adult-use stores opened in Missouri after legalization was approved by voters last November.

New Mexico’s governor recently celebrated the one-year anniversary of its adult-use marijuana marketplace . He highlighted the state’s more than $300,000,000 in sales from April last year, as well as the thousands and jobs that the cannabis industry has created.

Arizona’s total year-end 2022 adult-use cannabis sales was $1.4 billion.

After its launch in 2018, Massachusetts’ recreational market surpassed $4 billion in sales.

A top Wisconsin senator released a recent legislative analysis showing how much Wisconsin lost to Illinois last year. The analysis showed that Wisconsin residents without a regulated market were spending more than $121,000,000 on marijuana .
