Trump Admits Marijuana is a ‘pretty popular thing’, even as he argues that it ‘does damage’

May 1, 2023 by Kyle Jaeger

Donald Trump, the former president of the United States, says marijuana is “harmful” to health. However, he admits that legalizing cannabis has been “pretty popular” with voters.

During an interview with Newsmax’s Greg Kelly Reports, Trump, who is vying for the Republican nomination for 2024 was asked about marijuana policies. He was asked about the impact of the legalization movement on the “psyche” and “competitiveness “of the United States.

You see the same results. Trump said, “It’s not helping the people.” Studies show that it is harmful. It’s damaging–but from a voter standpoint, it is a popular thing.”

“Canada went all the way [with legalization], as have other countries.” He stated that some countries will not do it. “But I will look at the final results.” “But indications are this is not very helpful.”

Trump angered supporters by implying that mass shootings may have a link to the use “genetically-engineered” marijuana during a speech he gave at a National Rifle Association leadership forum last week.

Since announcing his 2024 candidacy, the former president has taken an aggressive stance on drug policy. He was indicted and arrested by a New York grand jury over dozens felony charges relating to alleged payments of hush funds to a pornstar during his 2020 presidential campaign.

He has talked about “waging war on the cartels,” and working with Congress on legislation that would impose the death sentence on “drug sellers” who were “responsible” for “death, carnage, and crime,” such as.

Trump’s administration took a number hostile anti-marijuana measures, from rescinding Obama’s guidance on cannabis prosecutions, to making immigrants ineligible to citizenship if they work in the cannabis sector or consume marijuana.

During the failed 2020 re-election campaign of Donald Trump, his supporters tried to portray him as the criminal justice reformer by repeatedly attacking Joe Biden for his history as an “architect”, or creator, of punitive drugs laws while he was in the Senate.

It remains to be seen if he will continue with this anti-marijuana speech. While Republicans are less likely than Democrats or independents to support legalizing cannabis, the issue is becoming increasingly bipartisan.

He seems to be trying to find a balance between expressing his negative views on cannabis reform and leaving the door wide open for analyzing the effects of legalization. Trump appears to have a clear understanding of how political candidates can benefit by embracing this popular issue.

He has previously urged Republicans to not place marijuana legalization measures on state ballots, out of fear that this could increase Democratic voter turnout.

Trump has always believed that cannabis use is harmful. In a 2018 audio recording, he said that marijuana use causes people to “lose IQ”.
