A new study challenges the stereotypical image of stoners by showing that marijuana users exercise and walk more than non-users.

March 5, 2024 by Kyle Jaeger

According to a study, cannabis users are more active than non-users or e-cigarettes.

The study published in Preventive Medical Reports in late October found that marijuana users are not less likely than non-users to engage in strength and basic exercise.

The study was conducted by researchers at the University of Texas at Dallas, and Ohio University. It used data from 2,591 adult participants in the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent-to-Adult Health between 2016-2018.

The researchers found that marijuana and ecigarette use was associated with the frequency of walking. Marijuana users walked more than non-users and ecigarette users combined, while dual users and non-users walked less. This effect was only significant after controlling for covariates. No significant differences were found in general or strength training between the groups.

This finding challenges the stereotype of adult marijuana users being less active than non-users.

The study, according to the authors, is the first of its type that explores the relationship between marijuana use and e-cigarette usage and exercise behaviors while accounting for different types of exercise.

The researchers concluded “marijuana consumption is not significantly associated with engagement in a specific type of physical activity,” finding that “challenges the stereotype that marijuana or e-cigarettes users are less active.”

The study authors speculated that marijuana users may walk more than non-users because they “may use cannabis to increase motivation and enjoyment for exercise, or concentration of marijuana in urban areas.”

They said that people who live in large American towns, which are often in states where marijuana is legal for medical or recreational use, tend to walk and use public transportation more.

In addition to the increased enjoyment of cannabis, a December study found that marijuana use before exercise could result in greater enjoyment and a stronger “runner’s High.”

A study conducted in July of last year surveyed 49 runners. It found that the participants felt “less negative affect and greater feelings positive affect, tranquility and enjoyment, as well as dissociation and more runner’s high symptoms when they used marijuana (versus non-cannabis). Participants ran 31 seconds slower permile when using marijuana but researchers said this was not statistically significantly.

The runners’ positive experiences with cannabis are consistent with a study from 2019, which showed that those who use marijuana as a way to enhance their workout get more exercise.

According to a study published in 2020, older cannabis users are more likely to be physically active.

Researchers found that marijuana users are more likely to engage in physical activity than their non-user counterparts.
