Both the California Department of Cannabis Control and the New York Office of Cannabis Management shared posts Friday, to help people locate marijuana from authorized vendors.

New York’s OCM shared a video from Empire State Development Commissioner Hope Knight who is also a member of the state Cannabis Control Board. Knight urged consumers to support local and small businesses this weekend in order to “maintain jobs and generate economic growth for the region.” This sentiment also applies to the marijuana industry, regulators stated.
“While you grab some #BlackFriday deals, take a note from #NYCCB member, Hope Knight and support #SmallBusinessSaturdays at one of your local dispensaries,” they said.

State marijuana industries continue to grow and develop. Officials have used their platforms more and more to encourage people to switch from illegal markets to licensed retailers, where products are regulated and taxed, and quality is tested.
Black Friday promotions from California and New York are another example of the normalization of this line of messaging. The posts contain links that allow people to find the nearest licensed dispensaries.
In the months leading up to the 4/20 cannabis holiday, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the launch of an education campaign designed to encourage adults who buy marijuana to do so from licensed shops in order to ensure the safety of the product and the revenue being used for equity and reinvestment.
In Connecticut, the officials have clarified that marijuana shops can remain open Thursday, unlike establishments selling alcohol which are prohibited.
In the midst of the coronavirus outbreak, a number of states made sure that cannabis businesses continued to serve their patients and clients, even though other businesses were temporarily closed or restricted.
Although officials in California, New York and other states encourage people to buy marijuana locally, it can be difficult for many jurisdictions in both states. The illegal market is a problem in many California cities and counties . They prohibit retailers from operating within their jurisdiction. Finding cannabis shops in New York is still a challenge due to the slow licensing process.
