Connecticut Marijuana Dispensaries can open on Thanksgiving but liquor stores must close, state officials say

November 22, 2023 by Ben Adlin

According to guidelines issued by the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection on Wednesday, alcohol sales will be prohibited on Thanksgiving. However, marijuana sales will not be affected.

Liquor shops will close, supermarkets won’t be able to sell beer and restaurants and breweries are not allowed to sell carry-out drinks. Marijuana shops can, however, remain open.

DCP clarified that, after apparent confusion regarding the two policies – with at least one local media outlet reporting incorrectly that both alcohol sales and cannabis sales would be paused – that “all cannabis establishments can remain open on Thanksgiving Day.”

The notice states that cannabis sales are permitted on Thanksgiving Day at all licensed establishments. Any reporting that suggests otherwise is false and should be ignored.

Cannabis stores can, of course set their own hours on the holiday. DCP advises customers to contact retailers directly.

DCP stated that alcohol can be purchased on the premises at bars and restaurants open on Thanksgiving Day. However, if you want to buy drinks for your own Thanksgiving celebrations, it is best to purchase them in advance.

In the meantime, Connecticut adults can purchase twice as much marijuana per transaction than they currently are able to. DCP announced a change recently that will limit recreational marijuana purchases to half an ounce, up from a current quarter ounce.

The regulators said that the adjustment is the result of a continuous review of the available supply and demand within the state.

The state has seen a steady increase in sales of cannabis for adult use this year, despite a slowdown in medical marijuana sales. Retailers sold $14.7 million in recreational products last month. Since Connecticut’s adult market opened in January, every month has set new sales records.
