Denver launches a psychedelics work group to guide local regulations under the Statewide Legalization Law

February 29, 2024 by Kyle Jaeger

Denver’s city government has formed a group to examine local regulations in light of a new statewide law legalizing psychedelics, which is now being implemented in Colorado.

The Denver Department of Excise and Licenses, announced on Thursday the creation of the Natural Medicine Work Group in response to voter approval of an historic psychedelic Reform Initiative at the ballot for 2022.

Denver, which was the U.S. city to decriminalize the drug psilocybin for the first time in 2019 is looking to recruit “community members and stakeholder with expertise in public health, natural medicine, youth advocacy, public and social justice, tribal and indigenous interest, and public health” to its work group.

Molly Duplechian said, “We are determined to follow the same process when exploring regulations as Denver did, when we became America’s first city with legalized recreational cannabis sales.”

She stated.

Denver has already established a Psilocybin Policy Panel, which is investigating the psychedelics policies under the local ballot measure. This body will inform the Department’s work in developing local regulatory rules.

The Department of Health and Human Services announced that it will be holding four virtual meetings per month, starting on March 28. These meetings will continue until June 27. application is due by March 13 for those interested in joining group.

Gov. Jared Polis , the Democratic Party’s leader, , signed into law a bill regulating psychedelics. This was in response to the voter-approved initiative for legalizing psychedelics. Colorado became the first state that allowed adults to produce, possess, and use substances such as psilocybin and DMT.

The Governor praised the state for its leadership in adult-use marijuana as well as the emerging psychedelic Reform Movement.

Polis has accepted the reforms and called psychedelics “promising treatment options” for certain mental conditions. However, he refused to endorse the proposal before voters approved it at the 2022 elections.

Since then, the governor has supported these programs. In August, he stated that legalization of marijuana and psychedelics had been “very positive” for the state. He also added that he believed adults should be able to make their own decisions about drug use.

Polis called for lawmakers to grant him the authority to pardon people who have been convicted of psychedelics in the past.
