Sen. John Fetterman, D-PA, says that he does not support Senate Majority leader Chuck Schumer (DNY)’s call for a crackdown against the nicotine product Zyn. He draws parallels with his reasons for supporting legalization of marijuana.
Schumer announced earlier this week that the Food and Drug Administration and Federal Trade Commission will investigate the marketing and health effects of the nicotine pouches, which have become popularized in social media.
The majority leader stated that the pouch was “packed with problems” – high levels of nicotine. “I want to warn parents because these nicotine pouches target young children, teenagers and even younger, then they use social media to hook them.”
When asked about Schumer’s remarks from Thursday, Fetterman responded that Zyn, like alcohol or conventional tobacco, “should be kept out of the reach of minors.” However, he is not convinced that these pouches deserve special scrutiny or enforcement.
He said: “I’m going err to the side of freedom, personal choice and that kind of thing when I have to make a decision.” “I made the same argument when I wished to legalize marijuana.”
He believes that alcohol and smoking are responsible for thousands of deaths each year, so there are “bigger problems” to be addressed than Zyn.
He said, “I’m not in favor of it and I wouldn’t ever support snuff nor chewing tobacco. But it’s there.” “We have all these things, and adults should be able to choose whether or not they want these things available.”

Senator Fetterman has been a long-time advocate for cannabis reform. He was also the lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania. criticised GOP lawmakers for delaying legalization in November as states such as Ohio made the change.
It makes it even more ridiculous. Just give them what they want. It’s so simple. “Make it safe, pure, and create jobs,” he added. “All benefits go to cartels but they should now be given to the state.”
Schumer also supports legalizing cannabis, though he has focused much of his attention on the issue in this session around a bipartisan marijuana bank bill, which passed through a Senate Committee in September, and is currently awaiting floor action.
He stated last month that lawmakers would “hit the ground” running in 2024. They will build on the bipartisan progress made on several key issues. This includes the marijuana banking reform, though he warned it “won’t be easy.”
