Top Things to Know

A new report from the Senate Appropriations Committee directs the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to assist veterans in getting medical cannabis recommendations, and to conduct more research into the therapeutic benefits of psychoactive substances. A new report urges the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to take measures to grow the hemp industry.

Senate Majority leader Chuck Schumer (D) has highlighted marijuana banking, a bipartisan priority that he hopes to see passed soon. Steve Daines, a Republican Senator from Montana, praised Schumer for his efforts in drafting the bill but warned Democrats against trying to broaden its scope.

Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody filed a brief to the State Supreme Court arguing against a marijuana legalization measure because it is misleading. The Florida Chamber of Commerce and Drug Free America Foundation filed opposing briefs.

California Assembly Public Safety Committee has approved a bill passed by the Senate to legalize the possession of psychedelics such as psilocybin DMT ibogaine mescaline.

The New Jersey Senate Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee conducted a hearing to discuss a bill that would legalize the possession and cultivation of psilocybin at home, while also creating licensed psychedelic service businesses. The Senate president filed the measure.

Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection urges people to grow their own marijuana responsibly when it becomes legal Saturday.


  • Separately, Gov. Ned Lamont, a Democrat from Connecticut, signed a new marijuana bill that contains a number of reforms. These include establishing offsite event permits for retail stores and restricting hemp-derived intoxicating products.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a law granting medical marijuana business licenses for Black farmers, and allowing doctors the ability to renew patient recommendations via telehealth.

On July 30, new restrictive Missouri marijuana packaging regulations will come into effect.

Federal

Supporters of the proposed safe consumption site of illegal drugs have amended their federal lawsuit filed against the Department of Justice.

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, (D), tweeted: “In November 2022 I will sign an executive order to allow people with certain conditions to find safe and effective relief from medical cannabis. The legislature passed a medical cannabis bill in March. We can achieve more for Kentucky when we work together.

Maryland’s comptroller discusses marijuana tax issues

Oregon regulators have issued a recall for several batches cannabis flower which tested positive for heavy metals and aspergillus.

The New Jersey Business Action Center has hired its first executive director to lead the Cannabis Training Academy.

California regulators have filed regulations on the Cannabis Control Appeals Panel, registration requirements for industrial hemp producers and fees.

Alaska regulators propose rules on breastfeeding in licensed marijuana businesses.
