Kansas City Royals become second MLB team to partner with CBD Company

June 7, 2023 by Kyle Jaeger

The Kansas City Royals, the second MLB team to do this, formed a partnership with a cannabis-based brand to educate people about CBD’s potential therapeutic benefits.

This is the second MLB team to embrace cannabis, coming just two months after the Chicago Cubs a href=”https://www.marijuanamoment.net/chicago-cubs-become-first-mlb-team-to-officially-partner-with-cbd-company/” rel=”noopener” target=”_blank”>teamed up with CBD sparkling beverage brand MYND DRINKS. The Chicago Cubs joined forces with CBD sparkling beverage brand Mynd Drinks just two months ago.

MLB announced last year its league-wide collaboration with a popular CBD product . Charlotte’s Web Holdings signed a deal to become “Official Cannabis of MLB” with the league.

Sarah Tourville said, in a statement, “The Kansas City Royals, as the only MLB team, are proud to have formed a partnership with Pure Spectrum.” Sarah Tourville is the executive vice president of the team and the chief commercial and community impact officer. This partnership gives the Kansas City Royals the opportunity to support a Kansas City-based brand and educate the local community about CBD.

Pure Spectrum has been establishing itself in the athletics world for several years. They sponsored the CrossFit Games 2018 and have partnered with U.S. Olympic bodies such as USA Triathlon and USA Weightlifting.

Pure Spectrum CEO Dan Huerter stated that, “as someone who was raised in Kansas City this partnership with Kansas City Royals represents more than just a ‘dream’ come true for me.” It is an honor to be able work with an iconic organization, and to promote health and wellness within my hometown.

He said: “Our partnership is a major step forward in the industry, and shows how far we have come.”

Last Friday, the Pure Spectrum and Royals partnership was launched at Kauffman Stadium with the opening of a “Pure Spectrum Lodge”.

The company’s release states that the area is equipped with fans and misters to allow fans to watch the game and learn about CBD while relaxing. Pure Spectrum was also the sponsor of Yoga Day on Sunday at the stadium and will be the sponsor for Ag Night on 1 August.

MLB announced last year that teams can begin selling partnerships to cannabis businesses. To do this, the products of a potential business must be certified by NSF International. This is a consumer safety organization and product testing group that sports leagues use. The club must also get authorization from the MLB Commissioner’s Office.

The NFL has been one of the most progressive professional sports organizations within the U.S. in terms of cannabis policy, and stands out from other leagues for being more willing to respond.

In a memo from 2020, the government clarified that players would not be penalized for using cannabis when they’re not working. However, they could be sponsored personally by a marijuana firm or have investments in the sector.

The league said that at the same time it had teamed up with NSF International in order to analyze and certify CBD products as legal, free of contaminants. This would allow clubs to store these products on their premises.

This update was a result of MLB’s decision to remove marijuana from the list of banned substances in 2019. Prior to the rule change, players who tested for THC would be referred to mandatory THC treatment. Failure to comply could result in a fine up to $35,000 This penalty has been removed.

Negotiations between MLB and the players’ union led to these policies. The league’s policy on drugs will be based on treatment, not penalties. Only players who refuse treatment will be penalized if they test positive for drugs like cocaine or opioids.

As laws evolve and medical applications are more widely accepted, a number of athletic governance organizations have recently relaxed their rules on cannabinoids.

NBA, for example, removes the requirement for players to submit to THC drug tests, but allows them passively to invest in industry. Contrary to initial reports, players won’t be allowed to promote marijuana brands.

Nevada’s sports regulators voted recently to submit a proposed regulatory amendement to the governor which would protect athletes against being punished for using or possessing cannabis as per state law.

UFC announced that in 2021 they will no longer punish fighters for positive marijuana tests.

Separately student athletes who are members of the NCAA will no longer lose their eligibility for play if they test positive for marijuana , under new rules that were recommended last year by a major committee.

As part of the collective bargaining agreement, the National Football League (NFL’s) policy on drug testing changed demonstrably by 2020.
