Marijuana: Where President Candidate Marianne Williamson Stands

April 3, 2023 by Kyle Jaeger

Marianne Williamson, a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, is challenging incumbent President Joe Biden in the 2024 election.

Although the lecturer and self-help author is not an elected official, she has made a clear position regarding drug policy. The war on drugs failed and it’s now time to legalize marijuana.

It is not an easy task to run against a president of the same party. However, Williamson has made headlines in both her campaigns and influenced the discourse on issues such as student debt and cannabis policy.

Williamson’s record regarding the issue is not great beyond statements made in interviews and on social media. However, the latest challenge from Biden has brought Williamson back into the spotlight. This warrants a summary of her position on drug policy issues.

This is where Democratic presidential candidate Marianne Williamson stands regarding marijuana:

Legislation and Policy Actions

Williamson, who ran unsuccessfully for Congress and the White House in the past, has never been elected to office. She does not have any legislative experience on drug policy issues.

On the Campaign Trail

Williamson spoke interview to ABC News, days after she announced her candidacy. She said there were “many things the president can do without working with Congress… The president should declassify marijuana now.”

Similar comments were made to reporters at a New Hampshire campaign event.

(Biden directed an administrative review of cannabis scheduling. However, congressional research have maintained it is not within the president’s power to unilaterally de-schedule it.

Previous Quotes and Social Media Posts

Williamson’s comments on drug policy and her social media posts reveal several themes. She believes that the drug war is a failure and that the president should legalize marijuana federally. She also supports criminal justice-centered reform which prioritizes those who have been criminalized.

He also claimed that those who are opposed to student loan debt relief, because they were not afforded it, are basically making the same argument as those who were previously criminalized for using marijuana.

We shouldn’t cancel college loan debts because it would unfairly affect people who have already paid them. This is analogous to saying that we shouldn’t legalize cannabis because it would unfairly affect those who were in prison for using it. It’s ridiculous.

Marianne Williamson (@marwilliamson October 18, 2021

Brittney Griner was incarcerated in a Russian prison for allegedly possessing cannabis oil. She stated that it was a “terrible” situation but that the U.S. still has punitive drug laws. Griner has been released after international negotiations.

Brittney Griner’s tragic fate is beyond my comprehension. I continue to pray for her every single day.

However, those who believe that drug sentences aren’t as severe in this country don’t exist.

You can free her and they will be free.

Marianne Williamson (@marwilliamson August 7, 2022

It was amazing that Brittney Griner was released.

The United States should not have anyone in prison for using marijuana. https://t.co/okx7dAvgGE

Williamson used quotes from President Nixon as a reference to prove that the drug war was largely a cover story to criminalize perceived political enemies, namely minorities or progressives.

John Ehrlichman, Nixon’s aide, quotes about the Drug War.

“You want to find out what all this really was about? In 1968, the Nixon campaign and the Nixon White House thereafter had two enemies: antiwar leftists and black people. Do you understand what I am saying? 1/3

Marianne Williamson (@marwilliamson June 12, 2022

“We could arrest their leaders and raid their homes. We could also break up their meetings. And we could vilify them nightly on the evening news. Were we aware that we were lying about the drug? Of course we did.” 3/3

Marianne Williamson (@marwilliamson June 12, 2022

Before Biden’s mass cannabis pardons and directive to an administrative scheduling review, in October 2022 Williamson repeatedly argued that the president could unilaterally de-schedule marijuana. This effectively legalized the plant.

@POTUS could reduce healthcare costs, cancel federal student loan debt, decrease dependence on fossil fuels and raise wages by increasing eligibility for overtime pay. It also reduces police violence through national policing standards. This is why Dems are so polite.

Marianne Williamson (@marwilliamson April 19, 2022

2/ This administration’s poor performance is not due to Manchin & Sinema. Biden could declare an emergency and extend Medicare to all tonight. He could also cancel all student loan debt tonight. And he could even declassify cannabis as a Schedule 1 drug tonight.

Marianne Williamson (@marwilliamson January 19, 2022

@POTUS could declare a national emergency and extend Medicare to all TONIGHT. He could pay off the college loan debt. He could make marijuana legal. To do these things, he doesn’t have to get congressional approval. https://t.co/exCxFIu6XA

Marianne Williamson (@marwilliamson February 14, 2022

If it wasn’t for the fact that this was wrong, immoral, and disgusting, then it would be absurd.

Biden could immediately remove cannibas* from a Schedule 1 drug. * He could free non-violent drug offenders.

We keep taking people’s lives away at a time we should be helping them. https://t.co/sBuU4uWhrI

Marianne Williamson (@marwilliamson August 6, 2022

The candidate also criticised the White House for penalizing employees who are honest about their previous marijuana use during the application process.

This is the most absurd thing I have ever heard. People are fired from government jobs for smoking marijuana, even though they supported the bombing of hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians. https://t.co/aJim8fcMc0

Marianne Williamson (@marwilliamson March 19, 2021

Williamson joined Rick Doblin, a psychedelics reform activist, for a podcast in 2021. There, she discussed research into the therapeutic benefits of entheogenic drugs, including for veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. She also talked about how these substances can impact spiritual growth.

Surprising people who fund psychedelic research to treat PTSD in veterans. Hint: There’s a Koch involved.

Marianne Williamson (@marwilliamson March 12, 2021

Williamson praised congressional efforts to legalize marijuana federally in 2021. She said reform legislation should include “releasing thousands of people from jail who were there for marijuana convictions as well as compensatory steps to help them rebuilding their lives.”

Excellent. Excellent. https://t.co/wvOv7fFAPl

Marianne Williamson (@marwilliamson February 2, 2021

She also celebrated New York’s legalization in 2021 of marijuana, saying it was a cause to reflect on the “terrible suffering & injustices that its criminalization caused to start with.”

While we celebrate legalization of marijuana, it is important to take a moment and remember the injustices and suffering that its criminalization has caused. This country has suffered tremendous damage from the Drug War. Let’s stop it. https://t.co/Jai2zO1Z93

Marianne Williamson (@marwilliamson March 31, 2021

The prohibition on marijuana was as harmful and ill-conceived as the prohibition on alcohol. It’s time to end it. https://t.co/7hwVZBvc52

Marianne Williamson (@marwilliamson June 12, 2019,

New Jersey Governor. After Phil Murphy (D- ) signed legislation to legalize cannabis into law in 2021, Williamson stated that she hoped that the governor would “release the many people in your State who have been charged with marijuana-related offenses.”

I pray that you will free the people from prison in your state who were arrested for marijuana-related offenses.

Marianne Williamson (@marwilliamson February 22, 2021

Legalizing cannabis has become more urgent than ever, not only for the unjustly imprisoned but also because it is being used medicinally and environmentally. It is time to end what shouldn’t have been a ban in the first place. @POTUS https://t.co/wld7MzGLH1

Marianne Williamson (@marwilliamson January 18, 2022

I believe he will. We must legalize marijuana and then release all those currently in prison for marijuana-related offenses. These things are happening. We must keep moving.

Marianne Williamson (@marwilliamson April 29, 2021

Marijuana: My personal experience

Williamson doesn’t seem to have spoken publicly about her marijuana experience. One thing she made clear after the 2020 presidential election was that she had never smoked marijuana and that she “not getting stoned with Senator Amy Klobuchar (D–MN), whom she ran against in that election for the Democratic nomination.

Amy Klobuchar is not the one I’m getting high with.

Marianne Williamson (@marwilliamson December 20, 2019,

She also posted a video of herself in a sanitary suit for the 4/20 unofficial cannabis holiday last year. This was to show her touring a Nevada-based marijuana cultivation plant.

Although I am a day late, I was unable to find the photo. Happy 420! Let’s legalize marijuana, then let’s release prisoners and erase the records of those who paid a heavy price to do something that shouldn’t have been criminalized. pic.twitter.com/9qAQ7jNdFE

Marianne Williamson (@marwilliamson April 21, 2022

Williamson stated that marijuana should be legalized after the tour. Tax revenue from cannabis sales would support universal health care, student loan relief, and more.

She stated that “we take better care marijuana plants in this facility then we take care for thousands of children in Nevada, and millions of children in America.”

Marijuana Under A Williamson Presidency

Williamson’s comments about drug policy issues indicate that she would be a proactive supporter for federal marijuana legalization, with an eye toward equity. She may even be open to considering policy changes that affect psychedelics if she pulls off a political upset to win the White House election.
