Minnesota Indian Tribe Plans to Launch Marijuana “Food Truck” To Expand Business Across The State

August 18, 2023 by Kyle Jaeger

A tribe in Minnesota that’s currently operating one the state’s only adult-use marijuana shops says it’s planning to open a mobile dispensary–effectively a cannabis “food truck” that can travel and do business on tribal land throughout the state.

Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians opened its doors for adult consumers the day after a legalization bill went into effect in this month. It currently serves about 300 customers a day at its flagship Red Lake location, and some people drive hours to reach the northern Minnesota city.

NativeCare, the Red Lake Nation’s cannabis retailer, wants to expand and reach more markets with its ability to move around.

Samuel Strong, Tribal Secretary of Minnesota Public Radio, said he was “very excited” to see the response from the community.

He explained. “You know, being able set up a shop and be able to service customers with the same level of quality and customer service and yet being mobile is more accessible to our consumers.”

“We are building the ‘Minnesota Nice’ brand in a manner that is good for both the tribe and cannabis consumers. It’s encouraging to see this positive interaction.

Minnesota’s cannabis industry is unique in part because tribal members were allowed to open marijuana businesses prior to the state licensing traditional retailers. Adults are allowed to possess and grow marijuana starting August 1. However, the process for enacting regulations and licensing traditional retailers will take another year.

The marijuana food truck will help fill the gap for people who can’t make the trip to Red Falls, which is a 3- to 4-hour drive from major cities.

NativeCare , which had a “overwhelming opening day” that forced them to eventually turn away customers and to suspend online sales, has said it plans to open two additional shops in addition the mobile service.

The tribal secretary stated, “I believe we are changing perceptions both from the perspective of Red Lakers and outsiders who come to Red Lake.” “That’s a really positive thing to see that cannabis is building these bridges,” the tribal secretary said.

The White Earth Nation Tribe has opened a cannabis shop for adults, after its governing council voted to approve marijuana sales at the end of last month.

The Governor has been very positive about the legalization bill that was presented to him by lawmakers after a lengthy legislative process. has criticized Republicans for calling for a special session to fix what they call “loopholes” regarding youth possession and public consumption. has also invited adults from neighboring Iowa into to participate in the market.
