Top Things to Know

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, a Democrat, signed into law a bill legalizing marijuana. This makes Minnesota the 23rd state in the U.S. that has ended cannabis prohibition. Legal possession and home-grow will be in effect on August 1st, with commercial sales to follow within 12-18 months.

The Nevada Senate has passed a bill that creates a Psychedelic Drugs Working Group tasked with creating an “actionable plan” on how to “enable access” which is “safe, affordable and accessible.”

The North Carolina House Health Committee heard testimony from the sponsor of a bill that was passed by the Senate to legalize medical marijuana. He spoke about how marijuana had helped him through his cancer chemotherapy.

The Florida Supreme Court has set out a schedule of briefings to determine whether the proposed ballot initiative for marijuana legalization violates the single-subject rule in the state constitution, as claimed by the Attorney General.

New Hampshire’s House Commerce and Consumer Affairs Committee has declined to act on an amendment that would have legalized marijuana by establishing a system of state-controlled shops, private agency shops and medical cannabis dispensaries with dual licenses. However, key legislators indicate they will revisit the issue in later this year.

Federal

On June 27, the National Institute of Justice is hosting a webinar about methods of measuring THC content in cannabis products.

Sen. Tina Smith, D-MN, tweeted that Minnesota’s cannabis legalization laws are not yet over. “Our fight’s not over — it’s unfair that cannabis is still criminalized federally.” We must legalize marijuana across the country.

STATES

The South Dakota Attorney General expressed concern about the legalization of marijuana in Minnesota, a neighboring state.

New Jersey’s Senate Majority Leader suggested that marijuana revenue could be allocated to schools.

Oklahoma’s Senate President pro tem praised legislation that lawmakers passed in order to combat illicit marijuana production.

Former Wisconsin Senate majority leader and former Assembly Speaker discussed the prospects of medical cannabis legislation for the state.

California Senator says he is hopeful that his bill to legalize psychedelics will be passed, partly because the new members of the California legislature are “open-minded”. He also stated there was no reason to reintroduce his legislation vetoed by Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, continues to oppose the bill.

New York regulators have enacted emergency regulations on enforcement against unlicensed pot sellers. They also approved a settlement to a lawsuit which has prevented them from granting licenses to retailers in certain areas of the state. And they modified an agreement that made it easier for social equity dispensaries to raise $150,000,000.

Florida regulators have issued emergency rules regarding background checks for caregivers of medical cannabis.

The Arkansas Medical Marijuana Commission meets on Thursday.

New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission is holding a public hearing on Thursday.

Washington State Cannabinoid Science Work Group meets on Thursday.

According to a study on impaired driving, “there is no correlation between THC levels measured in blood or [oral fluid] and [standard deviations of lateral position] at any timepoint studied.”

According to a study, marijuana legalization increases the earnings of young adults. However, it has little effect on adults’ wages in general.

ADVOCACY / OPINION, ANALYSIS & ADVOCACY

Minnesota Legal Marijuana Now Party plans to evolve its mission, now that marijuana has been legalized in the state.

The U.S. Hemp Roundtable has called on Congress to act against the Food and Drug Administration for “misguidedly using incomplete safety data to justify its refusal to regulate CBD in food or as a supplement.”

BUSINESS

Canopy Growth Corporation entered into an agreement with Indiva Inc. to assign and assume rights. This agreement gives Canopy exclusive right and interests in manufacturing, distributing, and selling Wana-branded products across Canada.

Akanda Corp., and Veridia Canada Ltd. have mutually agreed that a loan agreement will be terminated.
