New Jersey Governor marks a ‘Huge milestone’ for the state’s marijuana market, with over 100 dispensaries now open

February 14, 2024 by Kyle Jaeger

New Jersey’s governor has announced that the marijuana market in his state has reached a “huge landmark” with more than 100 cannabis shops open for medical and adult use.

“When New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission (NJCRC) was created, our administration had the goal of developing a stronger model, more fair, and more equitable for the launch of an adult-use marijuana market,” said Gov. In a Wednesday press release, Phil Murphy (D), said that the state’s cannabis market would be rolled out in a stronger, fairer and more equitable manner. “Reaching 100 dispensaries was a major milestone, which shows that we are on the right track.”

He said: “As I continue to work towards my goals for the New Jersey cannabis market, I am grateful for the Cannabis Regulatory Commission’s dedicated work and their leadership in this important area of our economy,” he added.

Just under two years after adult-use cannabis sales began, the NJ-CRC reports that exactly 102 dispensaries are now open.

Jeff Brown, the executive director of the NJ-CRC, said that it was “undoubtedly” a significant milestone for the NJCRC and the state.

He said: “After only having 12 alternative treatment centres for over eight years, in the past two years we have seen an explosion of businesses that clearly demonstrate consumer demand and the potency of the cannabis industry in New Jersey.”

Out of the 102 marijuana retail dispensaries that exist, 40 are for both adult and patient consumers, while 12 only cater to patients, and 50 only conduct recreational sales. The commission points out that despite the fact that 60 percent of New Jersey municipalities have opted to not allow cannabis businesses, there are at least 20 counties with at least one marijuana operation.

Brown stated that “dispensaries aren’t the only cannabis businesses to open,” Brown. There are more than 200 licenses for cannabis businesses in the state. This includes 23 cultivators and fifteen manufacturers. We expect that as more businesses open, the market will become competitive, which will benefit consumers by lowering prices, increasing product availability and improving product quality.

NJ-CRC chair Dianna Houenou stated that the commission was “thoughtful about creating New Jersey’s marijuana market, which protects patients access, keeps New Jerseyans secure, and prioritizes equality.”

She said that it was encouraging to see the market thriving and meeting its commitments. “I am looking forward to more municipalities opening up to the cannabis industry, so that aspiring entrepreneurs and patients can find more opportunities and consumers and businesses have more choices to buy safely and the industry will be strengthened.”

The NJ-CRC separately finalized regulations last year to allow marijuana consumption rooms in state, where people can buy and use cannabis on-site.

Brown, the executive Director, recently predicted that the state was well positioned to experience more than $1 billion of cannabis sales in this year, with the increasing number of licensed business where people can buy marijuana.

Since the opening of shops, the state’s cannabis market has evolved in many other ways. State cannabis regulators began accepting public comments last October regarding proposed rules that would expand edible cannabis products available at licensed retailers. These included beverages, chocolates and baked goods.

The has already waived some requirements for the sale of other marijuana edibles.

The NJ-CRC also considered adopting new regulations that would create a permit that would allow “clinically-focused” cannabis dispensaries enter into partnerships to carry out cannabis research using products they grow or sell patients.

New Jersey legislators are preparing for an active 2024. They have filed over a dozen bill covering interstate marijuana commerce, home grows, banking, and employment protections.

In December, the governor and state attorney general separately announced the recipients of $5.2 million in hospital-based violence-intervention grants funded with revenue from state-legal marijuana.

In the same month, New Jersey also opened applications for the second stage of its marijuana social equity funding program. The program will award $150,000 in grants and provide eight weeks of technical support to those who are selected.
