New Jersey Regulators Announce New Marijuana Deliver, Wholesaler And Distributor Licences With Social Equity Business First To Apply

September 8, 2023 by Kyle Jaeger

New Jersey’s marijuana regulators announced they would begin accepting applications for three new license types later this month, including cannabis delivery service.

New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission announced that the application process for wholesalers (including distributors) and delivery services would be open to all social equity businesses beginning September 27. On December 27, the process will be opened up to all businesses. All prospective applicants will have access to the licenses beginning March 27.

The state’s approach to cannabis retailers is consistent with the multi-phase application process. This puts people who have been disproportionately affected by prohibition in front of the queue for entry into the legal market.

In a Friday press release, NJ-CRC chair Dianna Houenou stated that the launch of these new classes of cannabis business licenses represents a significant move in continuing growth and diversification for New Jersey’s marijuana industry. “We have now more recreational and medicinal businesses open. Therefore, applicants for these new license classes will have a larger industry to serve.”

She stated, “We are committed in fostering inclusivity and empowering local communities as well as providing opportunities for people who are typically underrepresented but want to enter the marijuana industry.”

Jeff Brown, NJ-CRC’s executive director, said that the new licensing initiative makes sense, as the state is “on the brink of 50 operating cannabis retailers.” “This will help New Jersey better serve its consumers.”

On September 14, the regulators will host a webcast to guide people through new license types, and application processes.

has also raised questions about the supply of cannabis currently available in the state, as the high prices that consumers are paying have been criticized. The upcoming licensing expansion may help to address this issue.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy (D), and Attorney General Matthew Platkin announced last month that the tax revenue generated by cannabis sales would partially fund a grant from the state that is aimed at violence prevention .
