According to the latest figures, which date back to May 2023 there are over 100,000 patients registered in the medical cannabis program of the state. What are the main conditions that they treat with cannabis?
Post-traumatic Stress disorder (PTSD) is the leading qualifying condition in New Mexico. Over 55,000 people list PTSD in their primary qualifying condition.
More than 29,000 cannabis users treat severe chronic pain. Other conditions are far less common, including cancer (nearly 5, 000 patients), sleep apnea and anxiety, Parkinson’s Disease and Autism Spectrum Disorder.
New Mexico recently added insomnia to its list qualifying conditions. The statistics do not yet indicate a rise in the number of people using cannabis to treat insomnia.
The state’s cannabis program enrolls patients from as young as 21 years old to those over 70. Patients are evenly spread between the ages of 21 and 70. However, there are more people in the 31-40 age group than other ages.
