New York Governor Launches Marijuana Campaign Urging people to ‘Buy legal’ at State’s Few Licensed Resellers Ahead of 4/20

April 18, 2023 by Kyle Jaeger

The Governor of New York announced Tuesday that his state will launch a public awareness campaign in advance of the 4/20 holiday. This is to encourage adults who are buying marijuana to do so from licensed shops. This is to ensure the products are safe, and the revenue generated is used for equity and reinvestment.

It is important to educate people on the advantages of shopping in licensed stores. However, as critics have repeatedly pointed out, there is a lack of infrastructure for the adult market. There are few regulated shops and many unregulated businesses that meet the demand from customers who would otherwise buy from authorized retailers.

The new campaign is aimed at adults aged 21 and over, and includes digital ads, education resources and graphics featuring licensed cannabis businesses and messages about the benefits to participating in a regulated market.

Hochul stated that the campaign will launch around 4/20, an unofficial marijuana holiday. This is because cannabis issues are more prominent at this time.

A press release states that “April 20th, commonly known as 4/20 has become a worldwide phenomenon which celebrates cannabis culture. The day was originally a protest to the criminalization of cannabis and unequal enforcement drug laws. It now marks a victory for those who have worked tirelessly to end the cannabis prohibition. It is important to remind New Yorkers of the importance of consuming cannabis responsibly as we approach this much-anticipated day.

New York has been criticized for its roll-out of the adult-use marijuana market. Only a few retailers are currently licensed to do so, and there is a sea unlicensed stores that regulators have worked to eliminate.

The state has made several efforts to get stores online faster, but the points of entry are still limited as regulators and administrations work to give priority to businesses owned by those who have been disproportionately affected by prohibition.

Tremaine Wright (chair of the Cannabis Control Board, CCB) said: “We’re excited to launch this new campaign to promote legal and safe purchases of cannabis products in New York.” By supporting licensed dispensaries consumers can feel confident they are receiving safe, accurately labeled cannabis products and supporting their local community.

Regulators have also released a guide that explains how the tax revenue generated by marijuana dispensaries is distributed to local and state governments, and how it helps fund community reinvestment.

Hochul said that New Yorkers are encouraged to seek out licensed shops, even if they have limited options in the current market.

Chris Alexander, the executive director of the Office of Cannabis Management(OCM), stated that the state wanted to “ensure that New Yorkers were informed about the possible risks and benefits of cannabis use.”

He said, “Our goal to empower consumers and ensure that they have access the safest product available is to empower them to make informed choices.” “New York is home to some amazing dispensaries. I encourage cannabis users and canna-curious people to visit these shops.

The New York campaign is similar to “Buy Legal”, a campaign launched by major cannabis companies in partnership with New Jersey Governor last year. Phil Murphy’s (D) government. This effort, which includes firms such as Cresco Labs, PAX and PAX, is aimed at educating consumers about the dangers of purchasing marijuana products from markets that are not regulated.

New Jersey regulators have questioned New York’s launch strategy . Connecticut Governor said that it was “crazy” that New York started its program with only one retailer.

The New York regulators announced that last month they will double the number of adult-use cannabis licenses that are approved from 150 to 300. This is after they received feedback from applicants who said they could open their storefronts more quickly without any additional assistance through a program that was designed to assist eligible entities in creating physical locations.

The state has put emphasis on its role as a promoter of public education regarding the legalization laws.

, a taxpayer funded marijuana PSA, was aired during the NBA Finals in New York last year. It boldly addressed the racially-discriminatory harms caused by cannabis criminalization, and highlighted the steps taken by state regulators to correct the wrongs that prohibition has brought about.

TikTok was contacted by the department to request a change in policy for marijuana-related government ads.

Hochul has also introduced legislation that will increase the enforcement authority of to crackdown on illegal marijuana retailers, as the state struggles with the regulation of the adult-use market.

In February, the governor paid a visit to one of the few cannabis retailers that are currently in operation, but she did not buy any marijuana, despite her signaling an openness towards trying it in the future.

Hochul unveiled separately in December a marijuana product and business verification tool. Plans include posting a QR code at licensed cannabis retailers, and a universal symbol on the label of authorized cannabis products.

She also signed, in late November , a bill aimed at expanding the hemp market of the state through collaborative partnerships that identify new opportunities for using the crop and derivatives it produces as packaging and construction materials.

New York lawmakers passed a bill last month requiring public health insurers in the state include medical marijuana on their list of covered prescription drugs and allowing private insurers the same.

According to a survey by state officials, far more New Yorkers think that drinking alcohol is a public health issue than the minority who believe the same thing about marijuana.

A majority of New Yorkers also support the state’s law on adult-use marijuana, and they are in favor of having marijuana retail outlets open in their local communities.

New York legislators have also recently filed legislation to legalize certain psychoactives such as psilocybin, ibogaine and other psychedelics for adults over 21. Separate legislation would also decriminalize the possession of drugs.
