State Officials Promote Marijuana Gifting and Safety Tips for the Holiday Season

December 22, 2023 by Kyle Jaeger

State marijuana regulators are promoting the holiday season by sending out messages on how to give cannabis as a gift, make infused Christmas cookies, and keep products safe.

From California to New Jersey, New York to Virginia regulatory bodies overseeing the legal market are engaging consumers with holiday-themed social media posts, spreading information about their respective marijuana legislation and leaning in to cannabis culture.

California’s Department of Cannabis Control, for example, posted an animated GIF (formerly Twitter) on X that shows a grandmother with baked goods decorated in a marijuana leaf. The text asks the followers to share their “favorite holiday cannabis recipe”.

New Jersey’s Cannabis Regulatory Commission, meanwhile, reminds adults that it’s legal to “gift up to an ounce of marijuana to adults 21 and older in New Jersey.” Details about the policy are featured on a holiday image of gifts and tree ornaments, as well as pine twigs.

The message continues, “Don’t Forget, It Is Illegal To Transport Cannabis Across State Lines”, and includes a link to the government directory of licensed marijuana retail outlets.

Last week, in New York’s neighbor, the Office of Cannabis Management shared a guide on “Holiday Stash Safety”, which includes tips for storing marijuana to avoid youth access and accidental ingestion.

The post also includes emergency contact numbers that can be used by anyone who needs assistance after accidentally taking too much marijuana at a holiday party or accidentally consuming it.

New York officials promoted the state’s policy on cannabis gifts during the holiday season, reminding adults they can “spread the joy of the holidays with a joint or a couple!”

OCM stated that it is legal to give the gift of #NYcannabis to anyone older than 21. The link provided to the dispensary verification page allows people to find the “perfect products to gift in your nearest legal dispensary”.

OCM also promoted the marijuana farmers’ markets in the state that will run through the end the year as part of a transitional programme that is ending.

The Cannabis Growers Showcases offer a variety of “gifts that are perfect for the holiday season.” Adults will be able to give “the green gift this holiday season,” regulators stated. Patrons will also be supporting local #NYcannabis brands and growers.

In Virginia, the state Cannabis Control Authority reminds consumers to have a designated driver sober if they intend to celebrate the holidays with marijuana.

“Are you planning to get high with holiday cheer?” “As you prepare for the holidays, make sure to keep the fun rolling in the safest possible way. Also, plan a sober trip,” regulators advised.

The Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection has reminded residents that alcohol will not be available to adults on Christmas Day or New Year’s Day. However, cannabis stores can remain open as per the state’s legalization laws. officials issued a similar warning ahead of this year’s Thanksgiving.

The social media posts, taken together, reflect a new norm in how the states engage with the marijuana community, in a changing, post-prohibition world. States are moving away from stigmatizing and punishing messages, while embracing cannabis’ culture, commerce, and good cheer.

Last month, California and New York marijuana regulators encouraged consumers to shop at licensed retailers for cannabis and take advantage of Black Friday sales and small business by supporting them.

In the months leading up to the 4/20 cannabis holiday, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the launch of an education campaign that aims to encourage adults who buy marijuana to do so from licensed shops in order to ensure the safety of the product and the revenue will be used to further equity and reinvestment objectives.
