Taos ski Valley grants first cannabis license

February 26, 2024 by Madison Conner

TAOS COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) – The Village of Taos Ski Valley has officially approved its first cannabis license, and a local shop is ready to get to work.

“We started Bighorn as a delivery first service while we were restoring an old building in the historic part of town,” said owner Steve Weiner.

Bighorn Weed opened its doors officially last spring in Taos.

“We quickly got up to speed and are one of the highest-grossing dispensaries in Taos. It depends on the month, but we’re doing pretty well,” said Weiner.

They offer locally sourced farm goods and cannabis.

“The reason I wanted to sell local weed is because it’s always been in my business to support small, local farms,” said Weiner.

Now, Weiner is expanding opening up his business for delivery inside the Taos Ski Valley: a first for the area.

“Since we had done a successful pilot for delivery last year, working out the kinks and getting licensed and just figuring out how to do this, we were able to offer now daily delivery,” said Weiner.

Weiner said the village doesn’t have a dispensary, and the closest one is nearly 30 miles away.

“To service a market where this is currently no dispensary, so we have this flexible business model that is not only supporting local, our local community and local small farms,” said Weiner.

He’s proud to be the first to make it happen.

“These are all really cool milestones as the industry continues to mature, and so we’re just happy to be at the forefront of that here in Taos,” said Weiner.

He said the delivery side of his business has shown to be a big success for medical cannabis card holders who lack transportation.

Weiner stated that the village does not have a dispensary and the nearest one is 30 miles away.

Weiner said that the flexible business model allows Weiner to service markets where there is no dispensary. This helps not only local farmers, but also our community.

He is proud to have been the first one to do it.
