Ted Cruz, an anti-marijuana Ted Cruz, sips beer to protest possible lowering of the U.S. alcohol-consumption guidelines: “Kiss my ass”

August 31, 2023 by Ben Adlin

Ted Cruz, Sen. (R-TX), does not support the legalization of marijuana or any other illegal drugs. However, he is furious at the idea that the federal government would advise Americans to consume less alcohol.

In an interview on Newsmax, Senator Kennedy said, “Federal officials can kiss my arse” if they reduce the maximum recommended alcohol consumption to two drinks a week as recently suggested.

Cruz said, “What’s with liberals wanting to control everything you do?” He supports trans-affirming healthcare as well as government bans of abortion. If they want us drinking two beers per week, they can kiss my arse.

A group of people behind the senator, who appeared to be in a coordinated fashion, also took a swig.

Cruz has expressed frustration at the federal government’s desire to “control every damn aspect of life.” However, during his tenure in the Senate, Cruz has not cosponsored any legislation that would reduce federal marijuana prohibition.

Cruz prefers that state governments have the final say on what residents are allowed to do. During a debate in 2018, he stated, “I believe it should be up to states.” “I think Colorado will decide in a certain way.” “I think Texas can make a different decision.”

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has not yet lowered their current 2-drinks-a-day recommendation. Cruz and other right-wingers are angry that George Koob of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism has told The Daily Mail the U.S. guidelines “will not go up, I am pretty sure.”

Koob cited Canada’s alcohol guidelines which recommended a limit to two drinks per day “to avoid alcohol related consequences for yourself or others” and said that any change to U.S. advice would probably mean a reduction in the recommendation, causing Cruz to become angry.

Cruz isn’t the only Republican politician who has criticized Koob for his paternalistic comments. U.S. Rep. Tim Burchett called the recommendation of two beers per week “ridiculous.”

Burchett told Fox News, “This is what you get when 30 million Americans do not vote.” “Unelected, overpaid bureaucrats sticking fat noses where they don’t belong.”

He added, “I’m not a drinker but this is absurd.” If they want to see abuse, then look at Washington’s spending and the White House’s overreach.

Burchett said on Wednesday, “Weed shouldn’t be on the Same Schedule as Heroin.” The comments were made in response to the news that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is recommending that cannabis be rescheduled under the federal Controlled Substances Act as Schedule III.

Sen. Joni Ernst, R-IA, for her part called the situation absurd.

falsely claimed that the Senator, who does NOT support the legalization of cannabis, wanted to take away Americans’ beers.

The term “czar” dates back to an article in 1982 during the Reagan administration. The term is not a formal title for any U.S. regulatory post. The alcohol consumption guidelines are only recommendations and are not enforced by any government level.

Republican Rep. Brian Mast, of Florida — who is co-chair of the Congressional Cannabis Caucus — compared the alcohol guidelines with the federal prohibition on alcohol that lasted between 1920 and 1933.

Before, we tried something like this. Prohibition was the name. It was for a good reason that we ended it. It was horrible. Let the people drink their beer.https://t.co/w7gtzdKnLf

Cruz’s forced photo op was criticized by other users of X, formerly Twitter.

, a former Jeopardy champ and non-drinker Hemant mehta said: “I’m not able to drink beer. But I know that I would look better if I did.”
