Top Things to Know

The Congressional Budget Office estimated that a bill protecting people from being denied federal security clearances or employment because of past marijuana use, would be low-cost. This is largely due to provisions for reviewing previous rejections not being possible under the current federal recordkeeping policies.

Rep. Sydney Kamlager-Dove, (D-CA), sent a letter to the Drug Enforcement Administration urging them to “reject” any argument that moving marijuana from Schedule III to Schedule IV would be in violation of international treaties. She wants the agency also to provide a listing of “outside partners,” with whom it has discussed this issue.

Nevada’s first marijuana bar has opened officially. The first customer to enter was a local legislator who smoked a joint at 4:20.

Virginia lawmakers sent Gov. Glenn Youngkin, a Republican from Virginia, introduced a bill that would protect workers in the public sector such as teachers and firefighters against being fired because of medical cannabis use.

The Joint Judiciary Committee of the Connecticut Legislature has filed a bill that would decriminalize Psilocybin. The office of Ned Lamont (D) says that he is “concerned.”

California Department of Cannabis Control commissioned a new poll that found 62 percent of California adults now believe marijuana legalization has a “positive impact”–a greater percentage than those who voted in favor of the reform at the 2016 election.

U.S. Cannabis Council has launched a campaign that allows marijuana dispensary clients to round their purchases up to the nearest dollar in order to support legalization campaigns. This month, nearly 140 Curaleaf shops participated. The organization hopes to expand this campaign to include other companies in the near future.

The Ohio Treasurer’s Office is working with psychedelic medicine advocates to use funds from the opioid settlement to study ibogaine for addiction treatment. A Kentucky leader who tried to do this unsuccessfully now works in the Ohio treasurer’s office.

The study, funded by the federal government, found that although rates of treatment for marijuana use disorder are down nationwide, they have “concentrated” within states that allow legal access to the drug. This suggests that the “coercive treatment” provided by the criminal justice system could contribute to the decreasing treatment trends.

The Maryland House Economic Matters Committee Chairman is criticizing counties for trying block marijuana dispensaries and is sponsoring legislation to prevent them from enacting zoning laws that are more restrictive for liquor stores.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has requested permission to continue the hemp survey for another three years.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (DMA) and Rep. Ilhan omar (DMN) signed a letter to major bank heads about discriminatory practices against Muslims, while noting some financial institutions had restricted or terminated accounts of customers due to their “connection with cannabis businesses.”
