The study found that CBD-infused tampons are a ‘promising option’ to treat menstrual pain.

December 20, 2023 by Ben Adlin

According to a study published in the Journal of Endometriosis & Uterine Disorders, tampons infused CBD “achieved statistically meaningful pain reduction” when used for severe cramps or menstrual discomfort. The authors said that cannabidiol-infused tampons may have “fewer side-effects than anti-inflammatory drugs, while producing the same pain-relieving effects.”

The six-person team of researchers wrote that the findings indicated the potential for CBD-infused tampons to be a promising alternative in managing menstrual discomfort. Further research and exploration can help manage primary dysmenorrhea, a condition that causes painful cramps and muscle spasms. It affects half to 90 percent of women who menstruate.

According to the study CB1 receptors and CB2 are widely distributed in the uterine tissues, making them an ideal target to localized deposition cannabinoids for pain relief.

The CBD-infused tampon showed statistically significant pain relief during the first three months of the study.

Researchers used a placebo-controlled, randomized design to conduct the study. Participants were unaware whether they were using CBD-infused tampons or standard ones. Participants were asked to report their pain levels and their overall satisfaction with the product.

The report states that the team took into account a number of parameters including “vaginal irritation” and “sensitisation”, as well as “systemic toxicity”, material-mediated pyrogenicity, and potential risk for toxic shock syndrome. All tests passed, confirming that the CBD-infused Tampons are safe.

The authors noted that, in terms of pain effects, “the percentage change of pain from the basal pain increased and reached 100% in the last days of menstruation.” This can be explained by the natural relief of primary dysmenorrhea over a period of 7 days.

The study states that, when comparing the percentage of pain reduction 2 hours after the tampon was applied, “we observed statistically significant pain reduction on the second and third days of the first month and on the second and third days of the second month. This is attributable the CBD-infused Tampon.”

All the authors of the study have financial ties with Daye’s parent, London-based Anne’s Day Ltd.

Less than 5 percent of participants reported irritation due to the CBD-infused CBD tampon. Between 37 and 40% of women reported an “improvement” in vaginal dryness.

Two patients reported vertigo after using the product. The study states that “the events occurred rapidly and without the need for medical assistance after removal of CBD-tampon”.

The authors concluded that the study “highlights the potential of CBD-infused tampons as a viable treatment for primary dysmenorrhea and strengthens the case for further exploration of cannabinoids’ interrelationship with menstrual discomfort.”

This study confirms the effectiveness and usability the CBD-infused Tampon. The results indicate that CBD-infused tampons are a promising alternative for menstrual discomfort.

They also said that the study‘s small sample size meant the findings deserved further investigation. The authors noted that the study design could be improved by capturing pain data before and after the CBD-infused Tampon was applied. We can improve the design of the study by using a cross-over approach.

The findings of the new report add to an increasing body of research that shows cannabinoids are effective and relatively safe in treating various types of pain.

The Journal of Cannabis Research published a study last month that found that and opioids were “equally effective” in reducing pain intensity for patients with chronic pain. Cannabis, however, provided more “holistic relief” by improving sleep and focus, as well as emotional wellbeing.

Separate research published in the last month concluded that CBD is a effective, safe treatment for dental discomfort that is as effective as opioids and carries far fewer medical risks.

A recent study found that allowing people to buy CBD legally reduced opioid prescription rates by 6.6 to 8.1 per cent.

Another report, published in the journal Cannabis this summer, linked medical marijuana to reduced pain levels and decreased dependence on opioids. Participants reported decreased pain and anxiety as well as improved mental and physical functioning. They also reported better moods, sleep and quality of life, and less dependence on prescription drugs, such as opioids and benzos.

A subsequent study found that medical marijuana users experienced significant improvements in their overall quality of living and a reduction in pain and fatigue within the first three month of using medical marijuana.
