The New York Media Softball League, which includes teams from The Wall Street Journal High Times, and BuzzFeed, is one of the most recent athletic organizations to embrace cannabis, signing a sponsorship agreement with a Kentucky CBD company.
Cornbread Hemp is a new sponsor for the media league. It will join its playoff series starting in September, and provide players with hats embroided with the logo of the company and samples of CBD products like gummies and topically applied CBD.
The collaboration idea was inspired from Major League Baseball’s (MLB) moves and some teams such as the Kansas City Royals, Chicago Cubs and others that have recently partnered up with CBD businesses .
MLB announced its league-wide partnership with a popular CBD product last year. Charlotte’s Web Holdings signed a deal to become “Official Cannabis of MLB” with the league.
NYMSL commissioner Steve Bloom, a former High Times Editor who now runs the CelebStoner site, stated in a release that, although he had been “surprised,” to hear the pitch from the CBD company co-founder about a partnership, “we are actually the perfect league to get things rolling for Cornbread Hemp.”
Jim Higdon of Cornbread, a former journalist and author, stated that the players in the league “represent a significant segment of Cornbread Hemp’s customer base – active adults who are dealing with aches and discomforts caused by exercise-induced inflammation.”
He said that NYMSL is comprised of teams from Chartbeat, Forbes, and Euromoney Institutional Investor.
CEO Eric Zipperle stated, “Our mission is to improve our customers’ quality of life.” This partnership allows us to share our mission with the New York Media Softball League players.

The commissioner said: “I’m sure our players will benefit greatly from the CBD that Cornbread Hemp provides.”
He said that athletes have led the charge to use cannabinoids to treat sports injuries, instead of pharmaceuticals. “Our players share similar needs, and we are pleased that Cornbread hemp has taken the initiative to create this historic partnership.”
The Softball Team of America (STOTUS) in Washington, D.C., has also had cannabis represented. A team named the “One Hitters,”, comprised of drug reform advocates, was sponsored by a Colorado marijuana company. They were ahead of their time as they participated in multiple series of STOTUS.
As more states legalize marijuana, the rules for professional athletes are changing rapidly.
The National Basketball Association and its players’ union signed a collective agreement in which marijuana was removed from the list of banned substances and rules were laid out that allowed players to promote and invest in cannabis brands, with certain exceptions.
The National Collegiate Athletics Association’s (NCAA) Committee focused on promoting the health and wellbeing of student athletes proposed removing marijuana as a banned substance.
In early 2018, Nevada’s sports regulators passed a resolution to protect athletes against being penalized for using or possessing marijuana as per state law.
UFC announced that in 2021 they will no longer punish fighters for positive marijuana tests.
As part of the collective bargaining agreement, the National Football League (NFL’s) policy on drug testing changed demonstrably by 2020.
The NFL and its Players Union announced last month that , they will jointly award another round of funding for independent research into the therapeutic benefits CBD as an alternative pain treatment to opioids.
