Wisconsin Republican Lawmakers Continue to Fail Voters with ‘Smoke And Mirrors Medical Marijuana Promises’ (Op-Ed).

February 15, 2024 by Marijuana Moment

“Cannabis is a serious issue, and we should not treat it like a political game.”

By Wisconsin Sen. Melissa Agard (D)

Robin Vos, the Republican Assembly Speaker of Wisconsin, announced today that – the fake medical marijuana bill that he had claimed would pass – is dead. We knew this was coming.

This bill has always been smoke and mirrors. This bill would not achieve what the majority of Wisconsinites ask of their state legislators, namely full legalization for adults who use cannabis responsibly.

Republicans continue to ignore the wishes of those who wish to legalize cannabis. Speaker Vos’s comments show that he, along with his Republican colleagues in the legislature, are not serious about this issue. How many times do we have to see the same ruse from Republicans to show their interest in medical cannabis only to pull out the rug from those who desperately wanted this policy to become law?

The bill is now dead. No one requested our most restrictive bill in our great state. Instead, they asked for comprehensive adult use cannabis legalization. This was done as an economic booster, public safety issue, and to increase regulations for a substance that is available in neighboring states.

We have traveled across Wisconsin, meeting people where they live to raise awareness of legalization outside the normal processes because the GOP will not even allow the public to express their views about the need for legalization.

Cannabis legalization should be treated as a serious issue, and not as a game of politics. I will continue to advocate for the full legalization and responsible use of cannabis by adults. This will increase public safety and personal freedoms, as well as provide economic opportunities for Wisconsinites across the entire state.

Melissa Agard, a Democratic Senator in Wisconsin is the lead Senate sponsor for a bill that would legalize cannabis use by adults.
