Connecticut Adults can now grow marijuana for personal use under the legalization law

Connecticut residents 21 years and older will be able to grow their own marijuana plants on Saturday. This is one of the newest provisions of the cannabis legalization laws in the state.

The Department of Consumer Protection of the state published an announcement on Tuesday to to remind the public of the policy change. It outlined the rules, and encouraged people who chose to participate to grow cannabis “responsibly.”

What adults should know about the new laws on marijuana home cultivation, which became effective Saturday as part of the larger legalization legislation signed by Gov. Ned Lamont signed the following legislation in 2021.

  • Adults aged 21 years and older may cultivate six cannabis plants for their own use (but only three can be mature).
  • The maximum number of plants per household is 12.
  • Plants should be grown indoors and out of sight, in a safe location inaccessible by children and pets.
  • Regulators urge adults to store marijuana in child-resistant containers after it has been harvested and grown.

Legalization laws that are being implemented will allow medical cannabis patients who qualify to grow their own plants to do so in October 2021. This right has now been extended to adult consumers aged over 21.

In a recent press release, DCP Commissioner Bryan Cafferelli stated that adults who grow their own cannabis products should follow safe and healthy gardening techniques.

Connecticut’s first adult use retailers opened their doors six months ago. This home-grow option will be legalized soon. The market has grown rapidly, . In May, recreational cannabis sales reached a new high.

Lamont signed separately a marijuana omnibus law this week. It contains a number of changes, including the establishment of an off-site event permit for marijuana retailers.

The state lottery for licensing marijuana businesses will also be revised.

The governor signed a budget bill last month, which includes provisions that provide state-level relief for licensed marijuana businesses who are currently not allowed to make federal deductions due to an Internal Revenue Service code (IRS code) known as 280E.

Connecticut’s House of Representatives passed a bill, in May, that would expand the state’s legalization of marijuana and expungements laws, by requiring courts reduce sentences or dismiss charges, for a broader range of cannabis related convictions, and release those who are currently imprisoned on these charges.

In May, the House passed a bill that would criminalize possession of psilocybin mushroom.

However, neither of these bills was taken up by Senate before the end of legislative session.

Lamont also announced in January the state had cleared almost 43,000 records of marijuana-related convictions. In 2021, the legalization bill that Lamont signed became law. It empowered the state government to facilitate mass cannabis remission .

Connecticut prosecutors announced that in April they had dismissed over 1,500 pending marijuana case and modified about 600 others following a review, as part of Connecticut’s criminal erasure post-legalization program.
