White Earth Nation Tribal Council approved the sale of recreational marijuana on Friday.
The tribe is following the Red Lake Nation which, after voting to legalize marijuana earlier this month, will open its first recreational marijuana dispensary in Minnesota on Tuesday.
White Earth Chairman Michael Fairbanks stated in an interview, that selling cannabis grown on the reservation is a significant opportunity for the tribe. They expect to sell high-quality products at lower prices than any other dispensary.
Fairbanks stated that the plan was good not only for Minnesotans but for all Minnesotans.
Adults 21 and older will be able to legally possess and grow limited amounts of marijuana starting Tuesday. However, dispensaries are not expected to open for another 12-18 months as state officials establish a licensing system. Dispensaries won’t open until 12 to 18 months after state officials have established a licensing system.
White Earth residents voted overwhelmingly to allow the tribe to grow, regulate and distribute medical marijuana in the reservation by 2020. Over the last three years, the tribe has worked on cultivating. The tribe plans to begin selling medical marijuana at a new Mahnomen dispensary, located about 35 miles north-east of Detroit Lakes. Sales will be open to all adults over 21 soon after.
Fairbanks also said that the tribe has plans to open another dispensary in the reservation before September, with a third location opening afterward.
White Earth, Red Lake, and other tribes can also operate dispensaries outside of reservations thanks to compacts negotiated by the administration. Tim Walz (D).
