ALBUQUERQUE N.M. – Each month, New Mexico cannabis businesses generate millions of dollars . How can you join the cannabis business? Traditional experience is gained by gradually building up your career. However, the University of New Mexico Continuing education offers a certificate to help jumpstart a new career.
There are many misconceptions about cannabis. We decided to create programs. Audrey Arnold, executive director of UNM Continuing Education told KRQE News 13 that “we need to provide solid education if they are to succeed.” “That was our motivation.”
UNM Continuing Education partnered with Green Flower to create six-month certificates in cannabis agriculture and business, cannabis healthcare and cannabis regulatory compliance. Each certificate program can be completed online. The advertised price for each program is $3,000, with the next cycle beginning in November.
Arnold reports that they have already enrolled 800 people of all backgrounds in the certificate program. These people are serious. Arnold states, “They’re working hard to earn their education.”
Some in the industry disagree. Alfred Kahsin is an assistant manager of The Grass Station Dispensary. He says that you can gain experience by simply working in the industry.
Kahsin: “I was a complete novice when I started and they didn’t have any certifications, or anything else that they offer now.” “I believe that as long as you are motivated to learn about more aspects, and have passion for it, [you will succeed].” After my first bud-tending job, I helped with manufacturing and extraction and finally with growing. I wanted to learn every aspect.
Kahsin was able to create a solid resume in the industry with this hands-on training. Kahsin explains that “as long as you have a basic understanding of what is going on, I think it’s as valuable as the certificates.” If you can’t afford to spend $2,500-$3,000 on an education, but have relevant work experience, you will be noticed by employers.
Kahsin says that certificates are a great addition to a resume. Kahsin says that the knowledge gained from a certificate is particularly useful if you want to start a business.
Kahsin believes that any business course with cannabis as a component makes a big difference. It would have been very helpful to understand the cannabis industry better.
Audrey Arnold says that the UNM Continuing Education Certificate Program offers this. Arnold says that you will walk away with many tools no matter what area of work you choose. In the business track you will learn how to create a business plan, learn marketing and develop your own marketing strategy.
Arnold explains that although the online programs are self paced, it doesn’t mean they are easy. As you progress through the course, there are assignments that must be completed.
Arnold acknowledges that the certificates are not free, and that it is difficult to cover their costs, particularly when you’re starting a new business or job. She says, “It is an investment for yourself and your business.” The school offers a financing program.
Kahsin’s advice for those who are interested in entering the industry but don’t want to attend classes is: “Don’t be afraid if you have no experience, because everyone can learn.” As long as you keep that attitude, and have the desire to be there, you will succeed.
