Census Bureau begins collecting data about marijuana business economic activity as the market enters mainstream

August 17, 2023 by Ben Adlin

In an effort to keep up with “the nation’s constantly changing business landscape,” the U.S. Census Bureau has updated its survey of American businesses to better capture marijuana related economic activity.

First time ever, respondents can choose to be part of the cannabis industry when responding to the 2022 Economic Census. This survey is currently being conducted and it asks businesses what they did last year.

The 2022 Economic Census does not include any questions specifically about cannabis, but the bureau stated this week on its website that “retail and wholesale establishments have the option to choose cannabis as their primary business activity.”

In January, we asked 4.2 million U.S. companies to complete the Economic Census.

Other responses to the survey attempt to capture value of marijuana products and services produced in America, such as cannabis-infused beverages, foods and topicals. The survey gives examples of cannabis-infused products such as face creams and tinctures. It also includes cakes, pies, pies, and shampoos.

The bureau stated that “measurement of the growth and changes will ensure that these topics are captured by key measures of economic activities” “and the economic census remain relevant in a world ever-changing.”

The federal government wants to know not only that cannabis-infused gummies, for example, are being sold and bought on American markets but also the data behind that sale.

U.S. Census Bureau

Census Bureau has already taken measures to better understand the marijuana market, which includes its decision in 2021 to start collecting data on the cannabis tax revenue generated by states. States will now be asked to submit this information in their annual and quarterly reports to the Bureau.

The federal government has made other changes to the way it measures and makes sense of marijuana businesses as part of the economy. In the past year, for example, officials have added cannabis businesses to the North American Industry Classification System NAICS. This system is used by U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and other organizations in order to categorize employment data.

The NAICS now includes cannabis business codes following a policy recommendation made by a committee, which included the Census Bureau in 2021.

The U.S. Treasury Department announced last year that it plans to collect marijuana business data in order to combat money laundering.

In the updated Census Business Surveys, cannabis-related items now appear on nearly 800 survey . The form “Tobacco and Marijuana and Cannabis Stores” is most relevant to retailers. However, marijuana appears in surveys for food producers and other types of businesses.

Cannabis isn’t just one of the new updates to the economic survey. The bureau stated that other changes include electric vehicles, cryptocurrency, and revenue from telemedicine.

Marijuana groups push regulators to adopt universal label for cannabis products in order to facilitate interstate commerce and promote safety
