Robert F. Kennedy Jr. a 2024 independent presidential candidate says that the U.S. must “legalize marijuana to end addiction.”
Kennedy explains his plan in a new campaign video that uses clips from an interview he gave on C-SPAN in September. He says he wants to legalize marijuana at the federal level and use tax revenue to fund substance abuse treatment and rehabilitation.
The candidate who started his campaign as a Democrat, before switching to an independent last month said he wanted to build this infrastructure “as a part of my presidency.” He added that “renewal centres of detoxification will help address the rise of mental illnesses and PTSD, and drug addiction, which is debilitating to our children.”
Kennedy stated that “we need to begin healing our country in various ways.” Kennedy called for reforms that go beyond legalizing marijuana and taxing it. He also called for reforms that allow cannabis businesses to “actually deposit their profits and revenues” rather than operate largely on a cash-only basis, which “encourages even more crime.”
He said that if marijuana was taxed “robustly,” the country could “pay for addiction treatment for our kids.”

In his youth, the son of Robert Kennedy, former Attorney General and nephew of John F. Kennedy, admitted that he had struggled with substance abuse for 15 years. While expressing concern about “the proliferation” of mind-altering stimulants, he said that he believed in “personal liberties” and considered the current policy to criminalize and imprison people for drugs as untenable.
Kennedy has been promoting his comprehensive drug policy since he entered the presidential race. He’s said that this would include taxing and legalizing certain psychedelics.

In the same month, he also discussed his 40-year sobriety in an interview with Bill Maher on “Club Random.” He declined Maher’s invitation to smoke with him on the show. During the conversation, he didn’t seem to mind that the host indulged him.
