Home cultivation is legal for adults 21+ in New Mexico, and the climate is a genuine advantage if you plan for it. Heat, altitude and single-digit humidity change everything about a grow.
Plant limits
Adults 21+ may grow up to six mature plants and six immature plants, capped at twelve mature plants per household regardless of how many adults live there.
Security requirements
Plants must be in an enclosed, locked space not visible from public view. An unfenced back yard grow is the most common compliance mistake.
Growing at altitude
Albuquerque sits near 5,300 feet and Santa Fe near 7,000. Expect intense UV, wide day-night temperature swings and very low humidity. Outdoor plants benefit from shade cloth in June and July; indoor rooms usually need humidification rather than dehumidification.
Water and soil
Municipal water in much of the state runs alkaline and hard. Most growers here amend heavily with compost and check runoff pH more often than growers in wetter states do.
