BioTrack Is Being Switched Off. Here Is What Every New Mexico Licensee Needs To Know.

New Mexico is replacing the software that tracks every cannabis plant and every sale in the state, and the changeover is happening right now.

BioTrack, the track-and-trace system the state has used since 2015, is being retired. In its place is NMS2S, the New Mexico Seed-to-Sale system, built for and operated by the Cannabis Control Division. The state's contract with BioTrack expired in October 2024, and rather than renew it, the Regulation and Licensing Department went looking for a replacement.

The transition is already underway.

The dates that matter

August 25, 5:00 p.m. BioTrack was switched off for all non-retail licensees. Testing labs went offline at the same time.

August 31. Non-retail licensees get access to their migrated inventory inside NMS2S. Testing resumes.

September 1, 12:01 a.m. Retailer migration begins. Sales still run through BioTrack for now.

September 2. Retailers have access to both systems.

September 4, 12:01 a.m. BioTrack is turned off. Everything, including every sale, has to run through NMS2S from that moment.

If you are a retailer, you have until September 4. That is it.

What it costs

Nothing. NMS2S is free for all licensees, which is a real change from the fee structures most states impose for track-and-trace access.

What you have to do before the cutover

The state has published four preparation steps, and the first one is the one that will hurt people:

Reconcile your physical inventory against your track-and-trace records. Only what exists in BioTrack at the moment of migration carries over. Anything that is physically on your shelf but wrong in BioTrack does not fix itself in the new system. It arrives broken, or it does not arrive at all.

Sync any third-party system you use with BioTrack. Point of sale, delivery software, inventory tools. If your POS has drifted out of alignment with BioTrack, migration day is the worst possible time to find out.

Verify your primary controlling person contact information is current on NM-PLUS. Sounds like paperwork. It is how the state reaches you when something goes wrong during the switch.

Review your license and facility data for accuracy.

The part the industry is worried about

Training materials are published: eight role-specific manuals and eight YouTube playlists. But the state's own page describes specific training sessions as "in development" with dates "being determined," and lists a dedicated help line whose number is still "being established."

Retailers lose BioTrack in eight days.

Industry advocates have said publicly that they received roughly two weeks of notice, and that the state did not do enough to plan the transition alongside the businesses it regulates. Whether that turns into a genuinely rough week or a quiet one will come down to how clean everyone's inventory numbers were going in.

What this means if you just buy cannabis

Probably nothing, most likely. But if you walk into a dispensary in early September and the line is slow, or the menu does not match what is on the shelf, or the register is down, this is why. Every licensed business in the state is moving to new compliance software in the same week.
